Surfing is more than a sport: it’s a social and cultural experience. Being in the water means sharing the waves with other surfers. A positive atmosphere makes the experience enjoyable and safe for everyone. Here’s how to contribute to a positive environment.

1. Respect the rules of priority

Respecting priority rules is essential to avoid collisions and conflicts:

  • The person closest to the crest of the wave has priority.
  • Never “drop” on someone who is already engaged in a wave.
  • Communicate verbally or with gestures to signal your intention if necessary.

Respecting these rules shows respect for others and enhances water safety. These rules are among the basics taught in the first surfing lessons.

2. Be courteous and patient

  • Wait your turn and don’t rush towards the waves.
  • Encourage beginners and don’t criticize them: everyone started somewhere.
  • Keep a positive and smiling attitude: good humor is contagious.

3. Maintain safe behavior

  • Check your equipment and make sure it is in good condition to avoid accidents.
  • Avoid sudden or dangerous movements that could endanger others.
  • Be aware of the environment: tides, currents, and other surfers.

Safety contributes directly to a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.

4. Share space equitably

  • Don’t monopolize the area where the waves are best.
  • Take turns with the others so that everyone has a chance.
  • Adjust your position according to your level and that of others around you.

5. Communicate positively

  • A simple “Hi!” or a friendly gesture can relax the atmosphere.
  • In case of a minor disagreement or mistake, remain calm and polite.
  • Compliment others on their beautiful waves: it creates a spirit of camaraderie.

6. Respect the environment

  • Do not leave any rubbish on the beach or in the water.
  • Avoid disturbing local wildlife or fragile areas.
  • Participating in local clean-up initiatives strengthens the surfing community.

7. Be an example to others

Your behavior influences other surfers.

  • Adopt good practices and safety rules.
  • Be patient with beginners.
  • Show respect to all participants in the ocean.

The path of Yoga leads us into this role.

Finally…Be yourself.

Creating a good atmosphere in the water depends not only on the weather or the waves, but above all on the surfers themselves. Respect, patience, safety, and communication are key to fully enjoying surfing in a positive environment. A good attitude fosters enjoyment, reduces conflict, and builds a close-knit community.
